The Sulphur National Guard is a unit of the United States national guard. It was activated on October 16, 1917 and organized on November 5th. The Sulphur National Guard was redesignated as the Louisiana National Guards on May 1, 1942. On July 15th of that year, the Louisiana National Guard was mobilized to serve in World War II as part of the Armed Forces of the United States. In 1944, the Sulphur National Guard served in Germany during World War II as part of Operation Overlord. The unit returned to Louisiana in 1945 and remained inactive until reactivated again on October 16th, 2017 as part of Hurricane Harvey response efforts. The Sulphur National Guard has responded to Hurricanes Katrina and Irma multiple times with personnel and equipment.

It originally consisted of only militiamen, but in 1898 it was made up of both militia and professional soldiers. The National Guard is composed of more than 14 million men and women who are currently organized into 717 units. The Sulphur National Guard was established on July 1, 1915, in Louisiana by the National Guards Bureau. The unit was first organized as a company of infantry and artillery troops under the command of Colonel John H. McCloy. It was redesignated the 9th Infantry Division on November 15, 1940. On December 8, 1942, it was re-designated as the 1st Battalion/9th Infantry Regiment and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division which became operational on December 15th. The battalion initially consisted of three companies each attached to one infantry regiment (the 5th Infantry Regiment and two battalions from the 6th Infantry Regiment). When World War II began, both units were ordered to active duty with their original regiment assignment unchanged and they served together until August 1945 when they were sent home due to wartime limitations on manpower. In 1946-1947 there was an expansion of the unit when it formed two more companies: Company A (now Company C) in 1947 and Company D in 1948 which had also been detached from other regiments for service in Korea. These two companies remained attached to different infantry divisions through most of their careers but eventually amalgamated into this unit once again upon its reactivation during Vietnam War period in 1971
Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Orleans in west-central Louisiana. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Sulphur Parish and has a post office with ZIP code 78570. The settlement began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Atchafalaya River near present-day Sulphur Springs. By 1871, sulfur had been mined in what is now Sulphur Township since 1799 by Frenchmen working for British East India Company trader David Thompson. In 1872, General James Longstreet's army invaded New Orleans and captured Baton Rouge; it then returned to New Orleans and destroyed all evidence of mining operations in Louisiana so that future efforts would be more difficult. The Atchafalaya River valley became ideal for growing cotton because of its available water resources and mild climate. Cotton crops were abandoned after World War II due to disease problems caused by droughts and overuse of fertilizers; however, some residents have kept cotton fields around their homes ever since. The current name for Sulphur comes from "sulpiter," meaning "to cleanse." One early resident was Robert Armstrong who organized a local militia to help protect his farm from surveyors who were looking for new land to sell off in order to make money from taxation increases authorized by Congress during Reconstruction. That same year, Armstrong founded Armstrong Mercantile Institution which served as a warehouse and store complex on Frenchman Street until 1908 when it burned down due to fire damage done by looters prior to Hurricane Andrew's landfall nearby that year. A group led by Waddell Edwards rebuilt part of the structure still extant (now known as the Edwards Building) adjacent to Saucedo Drive on property now occupied by First Baptist Church before taking occupancy within days following passage of hurricane-induced zoning changes allowing multiple uses within one building without first obtaining Approval from City Planning Commission; this allowed them immediate development into large commercial/residential buildings including restaurant/bars/stores on two stories or more - note larger than typical footprint at time - later becoming one block long strip mall anchored with several restaurants/bars striping alongCenter Avenue with parking lots extending out onto Center Avenue between Fourth Street & Fifth Street - note large number of businesses located proximate large shopping center - NOTE: largest shopping center currently located outside city limits [New Orleans]

The original town site is now located on the Gulf side of Sulphur Lake. In 1840, Sulphur became a state within the United States and it was its capital from 1845 to 1870.
