Slidell, Louisiana is a city located in Slidell Parish, Louisiana. It was founded in 1856 by businessman John A. Sligh and named for him. The coffee industry played an important role in the development of Slidell, and its coffee beans are still sold and enjoyed today. The first coffee beans were roasted in Sligh's home on the banks of the Mississippi River. Coffee became popular throughout America during the 1800s, and Sligh helped to bring this trend about. He was responsible for developing some of the early methods of roasting coffee, including French press technology. In 1871, he opened his own grocery store in Slidell which became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1907, Alfred Peet bought Sligh's grocery store and merged it with his own company to form Peet & Sons Coffee Company. The company continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it went into receivership due to economic conditions. After the war, Peet resumed operations as a small business until he sold his interest in the company to Jourdan Coffee Company in 1957. Jourdan soon became one of America's leading coffee companies and remains so today!
