Slidell was founded in 1814 as a post office on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly and by 1832 had a population of over 1,000. Slidell became a slave-holding port and by 1849 it had become one of the most important cotton plantations in Louisiana. In 1861, Slidell was attacked by Confederate forces during the American Civil War and its residents were forced to flee. The town ceased to exist when Union troops burned it to the ground.
