Slidell is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in the parish by population. Slidell is located on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River and has a small St. Bernard Parish to its south. The first European settlers in Slidell were French Canadians who established a trading post in 1760 on what is now an undeveloped lot between State Road 9 and US Highway 59 near present-day Slidell Landing Boulevard. The post served as a center for fur trade with Native Americans, and it was also used as a military installation during the American Revolution when General John Burgoyne's army invaded France. The town site was selected for its strategic location – it lay on both sides ofriverine land that could be easily defended and had access to riverboats that allowed goods to be shipped upriver unimpeded. In 1801, James Kenedy founded Kenedy & Sons Navigation Company which became one of America's most successful shipping companies. What are now Slidell Landing Boulevard and US Highway 59 were developed as part of Kenedy's original town site by his son-in-law, Senator John Fenton (1815-1912). Fenton named the streets after family members or friends who had helped him achieve success as an entrepreneur: Daniel Boone Street (named for Daniel Boone's half brother), Edwin Waymouth Street (after Edwin Waymouth, one of Fenton's business partners), Jnoqueline Drive (named after Jnoqueline Lamar Lafitte), Augustus Pemberton Lane (after Augustus Pemberton Grant), Margaret Lane (after Margaret Thatcher) – all streets that still exist today within much of their original parish boundaries. In 1871 slidell acquired what would become known as "the port" from Judge Henry Waddell which included lands east of current day Fort Polk Road along with docks on both shores of the river at what is now downtown Slidell landing Boulevard which served as warehouses for shipping products upriver from New Orleans and other points downstream including Baton Rouge and Shreveport before being replaced by modern marinas during World War II. After Judge Waddell’s death in 1872 his wife donated this property to charity which funded various schools, churches and other civic facilities until 1954 when it reverted back to government ownership following Hurricane Katrina while much else within local government fell victim to looting/ damage aftermath landfalling storm surge flooding predictable from such A1 intensity event thus requiring Federal assistance period resulting in formal complaint filed against “Govt Failure” over failure initial responders capabilities given historic events ballet well underway

Slidell, Louisiana is a small town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Lake Charles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by Captain John Slidell and his family. It grew quickly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its relationship with New Orleans. In 1830, Slidell built what is now Slidell Elementary School and later served as the parish seat for Rapides Parish. In 1861, Union General Tom Gourdine fought a bloody battle at Slidell against Confederate General Pemberton. Gourdine's men were successful in repelling Pemberton's forces but they lost many soldiers and civilians including Slidell’s father-in-law Captain John Slidell. After the Battle of Prairie du Chien, Union General Robert Ewell ordered all Confederate troops in Louisiana to leave their sides or be captured and executed. The town experienced some heavy flooding during Hurricane Katrina which destroyed most of its infrastructure including many homes; however, slidell bounce back quickly thanks to volunteerism from residents who rebuilt or repaired local businesses and churches which reopened within weeks following the storm.(1) In early August 2006, it was announced that Hurricane Katrina had damage worth an estimated $194 million dollars in Slaterill alone.(2) Since then much has been done to help rebuild slidell from top down such as erecting new fences around the town limits(3), investing in renewable energy(4), creating jobs through road construction projects(5), providing scholarships for local students(6), fundraising for relief efforts(7) etc.; yet much more remains to be done especially when it comes to Economy Slidell should it ever suffer another natural disaster like Katrina did:(8)
