The Coast Guard has been existence in Louisiana since 1915. The first Coast Guard Station was established at Slidell in 1915. In 1954, the Coast Guard District was created and the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron were moved to New Orleans. In 1960, the Commandant of the Coast Guard was moved from New Orleans to Fort Worth, Texas. In 1978, the District Headquarters Squadron and Commandant’s Office were combined into a new Headquarters building on Decatur Street in Slidell. The old headquarters building served as a barracks for both active duty members of the Coast Guard and their families until it closed in 1984. On October 1, 1988, the old Headquarters building was condemned as a fire hazard and condemned by FEMA for its condition. It was replaced by a new headquarters building which opened on November 14, 1990. On July 1st of every year since 1995, the United States Coast Guard celebrates its anniversary with an event called “Festivals of Passage” which includes several days of recreational boating along Louisiana's coast including live music performances at various venues along the shoreline; food Lion's Den style events during campus break periods; shellfishing tournaments throughout inland waters; races between vessels during high tide; fireworks displays over Pointe-à-Pitre Bay; and more.

The Coast Guard Gift History in Slidell, Louisiana begins with Captain John S. Slaton who served from 1827 to 1848. He was the first commanding officer of the Coast Guard Station at Slidell. The next Coast Guard officer to serve in Slidell was Lieutenant George W. Cummins who served from 1850 to 1861. From 1861 to 1865, Slaton was the Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Station at Biloxi and then from 1865 until his death in 1868. In 1898, Commodore Isaac Purdy took command of the Coast Guard Station at Slidell and it remained under Commodore Purdy's command until 1959 when it became a part of the New Orleans Harbor Department. In 1962, it became a part of The United States Navy's Naval Postgraduate School which continues to operate it today as an adjunct school teaching maritime safety skills to Boatswain’s Mate (Gift) 2nd Class (Gift history).

Slidell, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 861 at the 2010 census. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in New Orleans and one of the most racially segregated cities in America. Slidell was founded by French colonists in 1718 as an early French trading post on the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly after it became a part of New Orleans County in 1813. In 1860, Slidell seceded from New Orleans County and formed its own parish; however, it remained a majority white community until 1971 when African Americans began to make up a larger percentage of the population. Slidingillians continue to maintain their separate identity to this day. The history of Slidell goes back far beyond its founding date – it has been mentioned multiple times throughout history as an important trade center on the riverfront between Louisiana and Arkansas. By 1800, when French explorer Samuel de Champlain first visited what is now Slidell, he noted that it had become "a very populous place" with "many manufactures". By 1840, Slidell had become known for its agricultural products such as cotton and lead ore; but by 1870 it had lost its importance due to increased travel along the interstate highway system and international trade within New Orleans County. However, during Reconstruction following World War II, Slidell regained some prominence as a center for black culture due to its high concentration of African American students at local colleges and universities. In 1971, after years of simmering racial tension culminating in violence at a white college student party nearslidell's airport (the events which led to NAACP protests against racism throughout much of America), slidell's whites rioted against African Americans who were living there peacefully under their jurisdiction - leading eventually to more than 20 dead including many women and children (the event also became known as "Slidell Massacre"). This conflict left SlideLL with deep scars that still persist today: over 60% of all homes remaining in slideLL are owned by non-Hispanic whites while only 12% percent of residents are black or brown; almost all businesses remain segregated too; schools are overwhelmingly operated by white parents while Black/Latino students attend primarily public institutions...
