Shreveport, Louisiana is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of Baton Rouge. The population was 109,851 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lafayette Parish and one of its most populous cities. Shreveport is a city in and the county seat of Shreveport Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 709,824 at the 2010 census. The Crescent City has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years. It was originally called "Acre" because its location on the Arkansas River made it vulnerable to flooding. In 1812, General Andrew Jacksono recommended that the name be changed to "New Orleans" in order to differentiate it from Baton Rouge, which he considered part of Orleans Parish. The first post office in Shreveport was established in 1827. The city's charter was granted on February 15, 1868. On May 12 of that year, New Orleans Mayor James Keedy announced that Shreveport would become an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000 people within two years. In 1898–99 construction began on then-new downtown Shreveport by developer John Matson at what is now Third Street and Constitution Avenue NE. Matson named his new development "Crescent City". After just six months of occupancy (due to lack of funding), Matson sold most of his property and returned home to Texas due to financial difficulties caused by the Panic of 1907. On November 9th 1908 mayor Harry Bailey announced plans for a new convention center located on Alabama Street just east of I-10 exit 167. Construction began in December 1910 and arrived at its original site in late 1911. The Center quickly became one of America's most popular tourist destinations with over 350 conventions annually hosted there until its closure in 1978. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29th 2005, many businesses were damaged or destroyed; however Crescent City remained largely unscathed as all but one business had reopened within three weeks thereafter.Hurricane Katrina: Damage assessment.
