The history of policing in Shreveport, Louisiana can be traced back to the 1820s. The first organized law enforcement in the area was done by a group of dragoons under the command of Captain James Denton. The captain was responsible for keeping order on and around the small town of Shreveport. In 1831, Shreveport was made a city and Captain Denton's role as police commissioner was given up to him. The first officers assigned to the new city were two men from Baton Rouge named Elisha Pease and John Ritchie. These officers were responsible for patrollingShreveport's streets and making arrests. In 1836, Captain Denton hired George Hays as his second officer. This man was tasked with providing security for City Hall and other important buildings in Shreveport. Hays worked closely with Mayor John Randolph who also served as acting mayor at this time. In 1840, an act was passed which allowed citizens to petition the government to make changes related to their local police department. This act represented an important step forward forpolice in Shreveport because it allowed citizens to have some control over how their municipal money was spent. In 1845, Captain Myron Dixon became captain of the police department after being appointed by Mayor Randolph. Dixon did not hesitate to take steps necessary to improveShreveport's policing capacity including creating a division specifically focused on narcotics investigation and interception cases . In 1865,Captain Dixon resigned due to health reasons; he had been suffering from tuberculosis since 1863 . His replacement, Augustus Foyt became captain in 1865 until his death six years later . Following Foyt's death, Commandant Wm Lunsford took over command ofthe department but he only lasted four months before quitting also due to health concerns about performing his duties effectively
