During this time, Shreveport became one of America’s largest African American communities and played an important role in social and political activism within black America. The name Shreveport originated from French settlers who called it "Sorelle." The first permanent settler in what is now Shreveport was James Hennepin, who arrived in 1814. In 1836, Shreveport became the capital of Louisiana and evolved into one of its most prosperous cities. It experienced a rapid growth phase during the late 20th century and early 21st century due to its key manufacturing sectors including engineering, shipbuilding, agriculture and aircraft manufacturing. By 2000, however, Shreveport’s economy had begun to decline due to several factors such as crime rates becoming high and an increase in metropolitan Orleans County’s population which has since surpassed that of Shreveport.
