There has been a national guard gift history in Shreveport, Louisiana for over sixty years. The first National Guard unit in the city was organized on December 12, 1861 under the command of Captain John S. Maynard. The unit consisted of twenty-four men and six horses. It served as a local militia until 1864 when it was absorbed into the Regular Army. On July 5, 1865, Shreveport became the permanent capital of Louisiana and the first state to have its own National Guard regiment. The regiment’s name changed to Louisiana National Guard Regiment on August 15, 1865 and continued serving as such until 1974 when it was disbanded due to budgetary reasons. The first gifts given to the Orleans Parish National Guardsmen were uniforms and horse equipment from New York City’s Municipal Police Department which had been donated by Mayor Abram Levy in 1860. In 1879, three years after the regiment’s establishment in Shreveport, Mayor Pernell Jealous gave each soldier a light artillery cannon called a “Volcano” that had once belonged to Spanish forces stationed at Baton Rouge during America’s War for Independence (1812-1814). This gift marked an important milestone for both the Guardsmen and their community; many other citizens followed suit throughout Reconstruction period giving money or items they could no longer justify buying with real world events pressing upon them (eager soldiers bought back any confiscated property). In 1892 Governor Nicholas Fenton established Order No. 31002drg d/b/a Alleghany rifles within the Regiment which were later designated M1 Garand rifles by Major General Frank Totten who supervised their production at Arsenal Plant #4 located in Monroe Parish near Alexandria since rifle manufacturing had become one of Alleghany County’s major concerns following Reconstruction period efforts there prior thereto On October 17th 1898 members of Company A 1st Louisiana Infantry(Louisiana) Battalion met at Masonic Hall in honor of Colonel Augustus Cushing who died November 21st that year while leading his battalion through Sharpsburg Battlefield where they successfully repelled Confederate attacks against Union positions This event marked one day after General James Longstreet arrived reinforcements from Virginia with orders march southward towards Petersburg where he would open battle against Confederate King Stonewall Jackson In 1899 Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Waugh Commanded Company A 2nd Louisiana Infantry(Louisiana) Battalion which fought at Kilpatrick's cavalry attack on February 14th 1900 near White Sulphur Springs Arkansas also known as Battle Of Sanborn Hill After two months long siege Company A finally relieved Battery Wagner fifty miles east of here on April 9th 1800 having lost 6 officers killed including First Sergeant John Ewing along with all but 2 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded214 On February 22nd 1920 Companies B & C 2nd Louisiana Infantry(Louisiana) Battalions met at Masonic Hall in honor of Officers Majors William Haddon Cooke Sr.(Battalion Commander), George Washington Davis(Second Lieutenant), Hiram Maxim Fulton Jr.(Captain), Edward Ransom Keyes(First Lieutenant), Harry Leland Huffman (Corporal)) during an inspection tour celebrating newly acquired recruits for Squadron VF2 UH-1 Huey Helicopter Unit based out of New Orleans pursuant to Air Force Regulation 1005 dated September 25th 1919 together with Bombardment Squadron VF2UHB Detachment No3 based out of Hammond AFB This visit marking another important milestone as it signaled completion of planned armistice negotiations between USA & Great Britain resulting in control over Mobile Bayou region following four years long conflict

The city was founded by African Americans who had to leave Baton Rouge after white supremacists attacked their town in 1871. Shreveport has been located near BATON ROUGE since 1819 when it was part of Iberville Parish and then St. Tammany Parish before becoming Orleans Parish. In 1861, Confederate General Jefferson Davis named Shreveport "the most importantbattery on this side of Baton Rouge". Shreveport became an important port for cotton during the antebellum period due to its location at a strategic crossroads along both banks of the Red River which made it easy for people and goods to be transported between New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana. Cotton crops were also grown around present-day Shreveport until World War II when petroleum replaced cotton as the city's major economic source. After Hurricane Katrina struck 2005, many small businesses were destroyed, stranding residents across central Shreveport without jobs or housing; however, Mayor LaToya Cantrell moved hundreds of people into temporary trailers while she worked to rebuild infrastructure and services such as schools and hospitals. Downtown business resumed normal operations in late 2006 but efforts to encourage development have not always been successful due to political opposition from longtime leaders in neighboring Stroudsburg Township who saw their economy boosted by shoddy rebuilding projects done by Cantrell's predecessor In recent years, Shreveport has seen some redevelopment with new condominiums being built near Interstate 10 exit 231A (the site where red river flows into bayou) as well as a number of restaurants/bars opening up around downtown including Seafood Unlimited adjacent to Convention Center which reopened after being closed for two years following Katrina damage While much work still remains to be done both within and outside central Shreveports limits there are several things that citizens can take pride in including progress being made towards redeveloping downtown area with better access for pedestriansability for bicyclistsand buses alike; revitalizing old neighborhoods like Caddo Hills westward; increased Chinook Park amenities such as tennis courts & playground; new research labs/offices coming online such as LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine
