The Coast Guard in Shreveport, Louisiana has been a part of the community since the early 1800s. In 1821, Baton Rouge became an all white town when planter James Kenedy ceded land east of downtown to black residents under terms that were later rescinded; this area became known as "the Hill Country". One important event which occurred during Shreveport's early history was The Battle for Red River Bridge on November 25th 1861 which ended Confederate efforts to cross The Red River and open up Central Louisiana to slavery. Thereafter Shreveport became an important center for cotton production with slaveholders moving their plantations south into central and southern Alabama until they were finally driven out by free blacks soon after Reconstruction began in 1865. Cotton plantations continued to be operated until well into twentieth century although some have been converted into apartments or other uses; however many remain abandoned and fall derelict today due bothto lack of care and Hurricane Katrina's 2005 damage which totaled over $60 million dollars worth of damage done within just two days! Prior to Katrina there had been several hurricanes that caused widespread destruction throughout the southeastern United States but none quite like Katrina which has left more than 400 families homeless including 150 children!
