Ruston is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of theossier-de-la-coeur Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Ruston was Maurice Neumann, who arrived in 1851. The town was named for John Ruston, a friend and business partner of Neumann's father. The first school was built in 1859; it became known as Eastern High School. In 1865, Ruston had its own post office and railroad station. In 1871, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the banks of the Conchouche River. These mills helped produce lumber for local homes and businesses until the early 20th century when they were replaced by other enterprises such as a grocery store and an auto dealership. During World War II, rustling by Japanese forces along the Mississippi River led to large numbers of American soldiers being interned here during 1942–1945; many remain unidentified to this day due to Freedom of Information Act requests from Ruston residents. After the war ended, rustling decreased but has not completely stopped since then because there are still numerous unclaimed cemeteries throughout Jefferson Parish that are open to looting by cadavres found therein (euphemistically called "death fields").
