Ruston was founded by settlers from England in 1839 and named for General Nathaniel Ruston who fought in the American Revolution. Ruston became a city on May 10, 1913.
Reston was first settled in 1814 by Frenchmen. It became a post office in 1827, and its present name was given to it in 1886 when the town of Ruston merged with the neighboring community of Livingston. The two towns had different names until 1886.
