Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is one of the poorest and most rural areas in the parish. In 1913, Pineville received its first motor vehicle when Roy Glidden bought two Ford Model T's for $225 each from Ebenezer Ziegler of New Orleans. In 1931, Officer Clarence Epps became the department's first African American officer when he joined the force as an intelligence analyst patrolman. In 1964, Sergeant Leroy Moody became the department's first female officer when she joined as a detective sergeant position with the rank of detective lieutenant. Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 7,584 at the 2010 census. Pineville is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River adjacent to New Orleans. It is bordered by Lafayette to the north and west, Hammond to the south, and Tulane University to the east. Pineville was founded in 1827 by Frenchmen who had fled from what they saw as an oppressive British government. The first settler in Pineville was Baptist preacher John Wesley Hardin. In 1835, Hardin built a log cabin on present-day Elm Street near where it remains today. He named his settlement after pine trees that he found growing near his cabin. In 1840, two brothers named Alfred and Isaac White settled in Pineville and started a cotton plantation called White Sulphur Plantation No. 2 which produced cotton until 1872 when it was sold to Jules Ferry for $2 million dollars ($). At this time, New Orleans became an important port because of its location on or just upstream of the river's confluence with the Mississippi River (at Chalmette), making it one of only five ports along that route open to shipping during hurricane season (the others being Mobile Bayou at Baton Rouge, La., Port Hudson at Vicksburg and Memphis). The ferry landing also gave rise to another nickname for Pineville: "The Landing" because so many people used it for passage during hurricanes such as Katrina or Rita when their homes were destroyed or damaged by those storms. In 1830s there were several churches established in what is now PineVILLE - First Baptist Church(1830), Second Baptist Church(1836), Third Methodist Episcopal Church(1839), Presbyterian Church(1840) & Methodist Episcopal Zion Baptist church (1847) - most likely due to fleeing Baptists looking for a place safe from British control after Hurricane Flounder devastated St James parish/New Orleans area; however First United Methodist Episcopal church still standing 3/4 mile NW corner of Elm & Fayette Streets active attendances 1925-Present
