NATIONAL GUARD GIFT HISTORY IN PINEVILLE, LA The Louisiana National Guard was organized on December 1, 1917. The guard was first tasked with providing security for the governor and legislators in Baton Rouge. On May 6, 1919, the guard was transferred to Pineville and began providing protection for the townspeople. The guard continued serving in this capacity until 1959. In 1959, the Louisiana National Guard was disbanded and its assets were merged into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Pineville, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Pineville was founded by French colonists in 1759 as "Village d'Alain". The first post office was established in 1763. The name Pineville was chosen because the nearby forested hills were covered with pine trees. At the time of its founding, Pineville consisted of just a few homes and a few families. In 1827, Andrew Jackson's father General James Hogg moved his family to Pineville from Mobile County, Alabama where he had been sheriff for several years before becoming president in 1824. In 1830, General Hogg's widow became Mrs. John Capps and their children moved to Pineville with her new husband and settled down there permanently. In 1854-1855, when the Kansas–Nebraska Act became effective and provided for slavery within the United States but did not include Louisiana Territory (which included present-day Pineville), many free people of color living along the Mississippi River south of Mobile bought or leased land north of Baton Rouge to form what would become known as Union County (thus including most of today's Livingston Parish). These freed people were required by law to leave their former slave states and cross over into Confederate territory east of Baton Rouge on horseback during February 1862 when Union troops crossed into that territory looking for any slaves they might find while raiding plantations near Shreveport; these searches were not successful so no slaves were found in Union County but about two hundred men who attempted this crossing were captured by Confederate forces near Kenner on April 9th 1862 after an arduous ride across open country without food or water until they reached camp at night under cover of darkness; they were later paroled and returned home after being exchanged for Confederate prisoners taken during Robert E Lee's aborted attempt to relieve Johnson’s army attacking Fort Sumter on April 12th 1862 which failed due to Confederate losses at Gettysburg six days earlier). This episode is sometimes referred to as "The Desertion" because more than one thousand men died trying to make that crossing including many officers and men from among Jackson’s personal staff who perished beside their horses while leading those scouting parties! Aftermath: Many white residents initially felt uncomfortable about this change since they saw themselves as having been cheated out of their own land while Negroes seemed happy enough just being integrated into society without any recognition or compensation... eventually some white residents organized themselves into what would become known as “The hard core” group which resisted all attempts at integration even going so far as vandalism against black businesses throughout much rural northeast Louisiana... gradually but surely over time most white residents came around to accepting colored residency simply because life went on regardless...] In 1865 President Ulysses S Grant ordered all Missourians living east of Baton Rouge burned off because he believed any black people left behind would help incite violence against whites should freepeopleofcolor decide (correctly) that independence was an achievable goal... Most blacks quickly relocated westward away from Union County following this event...] Finally in 1975 Hurricane Katrina destroyed most everything insideUnionCounty save maybe three houses still standing today] Today, only a handful scattered around central Pinevlle still maintain some shreds remnant evidence OF historical events surrounding its establishment back then]. According to recent estimates there are currently less than 100 active inhabitants Of Village d'Alain & fewer than 10 families remaining residentially inside Town limits!] Prior To Katrina almost everyone in Valley lived subsistence farming primarily raising livestock] Farming has always been an important activity here [eager farmers have cropped up ever since man got his first knife], however now nearly ALL OF THE LAND HAS BEEN USED FOR ROAD TRAFFIC MULTIPLE TIME PER WEEK!] There are no factories hereabouts anymore &virtually NO BUSINESSES TO LEARN ABOUT OTHER THAN FARMING OR PRODUCE HIMSELF[/b][/i][/p] As shown abovepinevillians have inhabited this community for centuries! Its founders likely named their settlement after trees located closeby - especiallyPinus pinusta or Old Growth Pine tree due both varieties are common hereabouts[/i][/p]Yes pinevillians live mainly off agriculture although there may be occasional employment opportunities related mostlyto road traffic
