Pineville, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in the Acadiana region of South Louisiana. The population was 1,827 as of the 2010 census. Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,251 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Pineville comes from a post office called "Pine Bluff" and its surrounding country. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Pineville were French Catholics who established their plantation there in 1765. A large swamp near by formed the nucleus of present-day Pineville, which they named after two bishops of Natchitoches: Saint-Jacques de la Garde and Father Jacques Marquette. In 1803, James Kenedy founded an agricultural society here and began to cultivate sugar cane; but this enterprise failed because of bad weather during the planting season. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson burned down Kenedy's plantation for resuming production under better conditions; however, Kenedy rebuilt it and became one of the most important cotton planters in Louisiana. In 1825 he sold his share in operation to Colonel John Salyers (1802-1875). In 1830 Gaspard Brousseau purchased some land east of town from Colonel John Salyers for $1 per acre (about US$ ). He built a sawmill on this property that still stands today. West Baton Rouge Parish was created on April 6, 1840 when portions of Jefferson Parish were merged into New Orleans County including Pinevillesector within that count’s borders until 1861 when those boundaries were reorganized as Iberia Parish following the opening of Iberia River ports along its eastern border with Lafourche Parish caused by Hurricane Katrina. On January 1st 1860 all Orleans parish citizens within 10 miles or so south thereof excepting Pineville payed taxes thereto amounting to $8 per capita just like any other parishioner regardless if they lived elsewhere inside Ouachita Parish or outside it althoughpinevillians enjoyed special rights peculiar to them such as voting privileges at county meetings even though they had no say in local government affairs whatsoever! Consequently much pinevillian history transpired prior to & during these years before our current community actually sprung up around “the Plantation” proper!
