Pineville is a small, unincorporated community located in the northwestern corner of Livingston Parish, Louisiana. It lies on the banks of the Mississippi River adjacent to the town of Prairie du Chien. As of the 2010 census, its population was 553. The name Pineville derives from "Piney Creek", which flows through the community. The first settlers in Pineville were men who had come overland from St. John's Parish, Louisiana, in 1824. They built a cabin on what is now known as State Road 9 near present-day Lake Pontchartrain. The first post office was established at this location in 1828. By 1840, there were some eighty residents living in Pineville and six businesses conducted by farmers and merchants involved in trade with surrounding communities such as Prairie du Chien and Monrovia. In 1852, Drury & Company constructed a sawmill on what is now State Road 9 and began producing lumber for local homes and churches. This mill continued to operate until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1870, two new stores were built: one called Peoples store and another named Lumbermens store after merchants Wm J Lloyd and George Lumber Co.. These stores operated until they were replaced by grocery stores around 1930 when Interstate 10 reached Pineville upstream from town center across County Line Road 12 (today's US Hwy 190).
