The Opelousas Naval Base Museum has a long history of hosting Navy deployments and gifts. In 1916, the United States Marine Corps took over the naval base after it was closed by the Spanish Armada. The Marines first named thebase "Canton" in honor of Commodore John C. Canton, who had led marines during the American Civil War. In 1922, the U.S. Navys Fleet Air Service based atthe Naval Base began providing antisubmarine warfare aircraft for use by both the Marine Corps and navy personnel. This gift gave rise to another name forthe Naval Base- "Opelousas AFB." In 1941, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, General George C Marshall ordered all U.S Navy forces in Louisiana to be mobilized for war protection of Southeast Asia and Guam. The Opelousas NavalBase became an important part of this mobilization effort with its ability to provide airfields and shipyards throughout Gulfport parish as well as housing units for sailors and their families.. In 1946, Operation Neptune's Spear ended World War II while also causing many civilian casualties in Hiroshima and Nagasaki following Japans attack on those two cities without warning or provocation from China or other nations involved in that conflict.. The Opelousas NavalBase was once again activated as a result of this conflict when Rear Admiral Chester W Nimitz called upon us to help lead United States forces into Okinawa against Japanese forces.. As a result of Operation Neptune's Spear, thousands of Marines were sent back home missing limbs or battlefield injuries which would have devastating effects on them emotionally and physically years later.. After World War II ended there was general sentiment within our military that we should move away from land-based operations towards aircraft-based assaults on Axis targets deep inside Europe/Germany through Operation Overlord which began on April 6th 1945 with USS Yorktownlaunching Bombs against German airfields near Münster Germany…Operation Neptune's Spear marked not only our return to amphibious warfare but also our capability to deploy ships larger than small boats onto various beaches all along America’s coastlines…. thus opening up new possibilities for coastal bombardment even beyond Normandy itself….. Aftermath: more than 2 million casualties including 37500 Americans killed; 1000000 wounded; $2 billion invested in reconstruction worldwide During WWII both Opelousas NAS & USMC furnished luxury brand radios thru GI Joes (Gift given thru Armed Forces Radio Corporation) many Hollywood stars postwar celebrities like Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis received special privileges including private phone calls from White House Chief Of Staff James Byrnes direct to their homes

This ability for each sailor/woman to have their own personalized Gift To My Shipmates was fostered through careful planning which included input from active duty sailors/women who serve aboard our naval vessels*. The goal was not only create a meaningful gesture but also allow sailors/women from allcomers* alike access to these amazing tools used daily by those who dedicate their lives towards maritime safety*. The Opelousas Naval Militia was activated on December 7, 1941 in response to the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The Opelousas Naval Militia served until its dissolution on May 1, 1946.
Opelousas is a small town located in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,539 at the 2010 census. Opelousas is the county seat of Tangipahoa Parish. It was named for General James Wilkinson (1772-1828), who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Representative from Rapides Parish. The first settler in what is now Opelousas was Jethro Bowen in 1799. He and his wife, Deborah, founded a trading post on the banks of the Teche River near modern day Baton Rouge. In 1802, Opelousas became a part of Transylvania County and then Texas County until it became part of Tangipahoa Parish in 1827. In that year, General Wilkinson appointed John Sibley to be its first sheriff. In 1836, when Louisiana attained statehood, Tangipahoa Parish become Orleans parish under Governor Robert Anderson's administration. On July 1, 1840, Confederate General Braxton Bragg landed at New Iberia on Bayou Teche with 5 cannons and 7 men to attack Opelousa; however he only captured 3 women and children before turning back without entering the town proper (the events leading up to this were chronicled by Nathaniel Hawthorne). On October 8th of that same year Union forces arrived at New Iberia from Baton Rouge and attacked Brigade Captain Michael Covington's brigade entrenched at Fort Snelling; after three hours of combat Covington ordered his surrender effective immediately due to lack of food or artillery support; this event is considered one of the most significant battlefield victories ever achieved by Union troops against Confederate forces during the Civil War.. In 1861-1865 Opelousas was occupied by Confederate forces during their attempt to take Vermilion Bayou along with other strategic waterways used by Union forces such as Mississippi River crossings and Baton Rouge Harbor; ultimately they failed due to overwhelming Union resistance including an engagement where over 100 cannon were fired onto a Confederate position but no soldiers were killed or wounded
