The Marines have been deployed in Opelousas for over fifty years. The marines are a part of the Louisiana National Guard and are there to protect our citizens and provide support to local law enforcement. The marines have also been known to give back to the community by donating their time and resources to various local charities. In 1948, Opelousas was chosen as the site for Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. This base provides training for marine reservists and allows them to deploy on operations such as Operation Neptune’s Spear which helped end World War II. In 2006, the Marine Barracks were dedicated in honor of Major General John R. Pershing who is considered the founder of the Marine Corps. The barracks house two thousand Marines who rotate through here every year. On December 8, 1915, the Marine detachment at Opelousas was ordered to send a gift to their French counterparts. The gift was sent by Capt. Alfred W. Cook, commanding officer of the detachment and member of the Marines who had fought in World War I. The gift was a set of musical instruments that were made from pieces of brass donated by local manufacturers and then shipped to France as souvenirs for Marines who had served in France during World War I.
Opelousas is located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The city was founded in 1849 by Captain John Opelousas and his wife Anna. The present day Opelousas was formed from the merger of two small villages – Plantation Point and Alexandria – on the banks of the Assumption River. The city's economy is based on manufacturing, with a significant presence in shipbuilding and construction. Manufacturing jobs have been lost over the past decade as technology has replaced traditional manufacturing methods. The city also depends heavily on tourism for revenue, but this sector has not fared well in recent years due to infrastructure constraints and a decrease in visitor arrivals. Opelousas's attractions include New Orleans' 5th Ward neighborhood where much of early French Creole culture still survives, the All Saints' Cathedral which was designed by Confederate General Pemberton and dedicated in 1865, the Opelousas Arsenal National Historic Site which contains an abundance of cannons dating back to the American Revolution, and City Park which includes a botanical garden, basketball court, dog park, miniature golf course, and large pond used for fishing during summer months. The largest shopping district in town is located around Occidental Avenue near Pine Street; other major shopping areas are located along Canal Street between Third Street/Downtown Opelousas (the old downtown), Fourth Street north of Interstate 10 (northwest side), Farmer’s Market Place east of I-10 near Veterans Parkway/US 50 (southwest side), and on Lafayette Boulevard east of US 50 just outside of town limits. There are several smaller malls scattered throughout central Opelousa including: Walmart Supercenter at 9th St NW & I-10//Shoppes at CenturyLink Center southbound I-10 exit ramp (opened Aug 2017)

Opelousas was founded in 1798 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Trinity River. The town quickly became an important center for cotton production and trade, and its location on the Chitimacha River made it a convenient transportation hub. Opelousas grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1821 it had reached its peak population of around 30,000 people. However, the town's prosperity came to a halt after the American Civil War resulted in a decline in both cotton production and market demand. By the late 1800s, Opelousas had largely fallen out of favor as a commercial center due to its lack of infrastructure and other advantages over similar towns across south Louisiana. In 1906, however, Opelousas regained some of its former stature as a manufacturing center thanks to the arrival of several major automobile manufacturers. Today, Opelousas is still an important cultural and economic destination withinsouth Louisiana; however, it has experienced recent declines in population and economic importance due to competition from more populous cities such as Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
Opelousas, Louisiana was founded in 1805 by Captain John Holland as a trading post on the Gulf of Mexico. The town rapidly grew and became an important commercial center in the area. In 1821, Opelousas was chartered as a city and developed into one of the most prosperous cities in Louisiana. It remained an important community until the late 19th century when it gradually lost its economic significance.
