The history of Marines deployments to New Orleans began in the late 1800s. The Marine Corps was founded on April 14, 1846, and served as a Military Police force until it became an infantry regiment in 1875. The Marine Regiment served with distinction in the Spanish-American War (1899-1902), World War I (1914-1918), and World War II (1939-1945). In 1927, the Marine Regiment was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. During World War II, 1/9th Marines participated in amphibious assaults on Saipan Island and Tinian Atoll. The battalion also fought at Guam and Iwo Jima. Following the war, members of 1/9th Marines were activated for participation in President Harry S Truman’s Readjustment Plan of 1948 which aimed to rebuild America after World War II. In 1951, elements of 1/9th Marines deployed to South Korea during the Korean Conflict which resulted in one death and numerous injuries among Marines. After operations along the DMZ between North and South Korea ended with an armistice on July 27, 1953, elements of 1/9th Marines returned home aboard USS Missouri (BB 43) following a two week deployment dubbed Operation Linebacker I. In 1955, elements of 1/9th Marines again deployed to South Korea during the Korean Conflict which resulted in three dead and many injured among Marines including LtCol John Dormer who later received the Presidential Unit Citation for his heroism during this conflict. Following its return from duty in South Korea, 2nd Battalion 9th Marines underwent additional training at Camp Pendleton before deploying to Beirut Lebanon where they played key roles in repelling an attempted terrorist attack against U .S . Embassy personnel on October 15, 1958. One year later on November 4TH 1958 2/9ths marines reassembled at NAS Pensacola Florida for their first Vietnam deployment where they participated in ground combat along various parts of Vietnam including support operations for ARVN forces fighting against Democratic Republic of Viet Nam government troops known as “the Viet Cong” or “VC” units). A total of nineteen men lost their lives while serving with Company F 3rd Battalion 9th Infantrymen during this tour that spanned two years from February 1959 through December 1960; five more fatalities occurred within twelve months leading up to their withdrawal from Vietnam on December 6th 1960 having achieved a casualty rate some 50% lower than what had been experienced previously while abroad within United States military forces
