In 1837, Charles Schultz founded the City Coffee Company in what is now Chalmette Avenue. Schultz was one of the early pioneers of modern American coffee culture, and his company became one of the most influential in New Orleans. The City Coffee Company continued to produce high-quality beans until it closed its doors in 1955. The industry around New Orleans continued to thrive during World War II, as many families turned to coffee as a source of sustenance. In 1945, Don Broussard founded La Cafeteria du Nord (later Don Broussard's Café) on Decatur Street near Napoleon Square – which would become one of the city's earliest cafes. La Cafeteria Du Nord continued to serve up quality coffee until it closed its doors in 1984. During the 1960s and 1970s, New Orleans saw an influx of Italian refugees who began working at local restaurants as baristas.
