The United StatesArmy Garrison in New Orleans was established in 1802. The first U.S. military installation in Louisiana was at Baton Rouge, but it closed in 1800 due to disease and lack of appropriations. In 1802, the garrison was moved to New Orleans, where it remained until 1898. During its time there, the garrison furnished arms and ammunition to both the French and American armies during the Napoleonic Wars and also served as a Headquarters for General James K. Polk during his campaigns against Mexico. The Garrison's artifacts can be seen on display at various locations around town today including the Louisiana State Capitol building and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church located on Magazine Street between Canal Street and Esplanade Avenue). In 1898, following World War I, the Garrison disbanded and its assets were donated to the City of New Orleans through an act of Congress (Hagood Act No. 9). The city retains ownership of most of these assets to this day including artillery pieces stored at old Fort Moultrie along with other historical artifacts from past military installations throughout Louisiana including Baton Rouge and Monroe.
