In 1840s construction began on what would become Riverbend Park;[12][13][14] this included additions to River Bend Boulevard including new streets leading eastward from downtown along its surface watercourse until it reached Orchard Lakefront Drive near present-day Interstate 10/US Highway 61 interchange. New Iberia, Louisiana was founded by French colonists in 1718. The town quickly grew and soon became a major trading center for the area. New Iberia became a state of the United States in 1803 and remained an important port until the early 20th century. The city experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as a result of its status as a manufacturing center for cotton, sugar cane, and other products. In recent years, New Iberia has seen increasing development as a bedroom community for Baton Rouge. The history of New Iberia can be traced back to 1718 when French colonists arrived in what is now Louisiana. At first they set up shop near the mouth of the Mississippi River, but within weeks they had founded a small village on the banks of the river called Nantes. By 1720 many of these original settlers had moved upriver to establish new villages at Passchendaele Pointe and Bayou de la Glace (now known as Lake Pontchartrain). By this time, however, Nantes was already well-established as an administrative and commercial center for southeastern Louisiana. In 1724 Francois Pagenaud built Fort Condorcet on Passchendaele Pointe after successful testing of his new artillery system against Spanish forces at San Jacinto he had been victorious over two years earlier at Bexar County Court House in Texas City (now Austin). From this fort Pagenaud could monitor much of southeastern Louisiana including New Iberia which was only 12 miles from his basecamp on bayou Saint John. It would not be until December 6, 1727 that Pagenaud finally succeeded in driving out the Spanish garrison at San Jacinto which led to two months of intense fighting between French and Spanish batteries across four miles wide front line along both banks of the Arkansas River near present day Monroe Parish northeast of Baton Rouge. Ultimately it was Frenchman Antoine Lavoisier who finally realized “the grandeur [of] this extensive territory” after studying aerial reconnaissance made possible by improved technology then available only to military commanders with permission from Parliamentarian rule under King George III – land that today includes most or all modern day Orleans Parish eastward to Lafayette parish including much eastern Jefferson Parish belonging to Mobile County Alabama
