New Iberia is a parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 46,362. The parish seat is New Iberia and the largest city is Hammond. It was created on November 1, 1803 from parts of Rapides and Jefferson parishes. The first permanent French settlement in what is now New Iberia Parish was Fort de Natchitoches, established by Jean-Baptiste Jardin in 1768 as part of his efforts to establish a colony in Louisiana after coming overland from Canada along the Mississippi River. In 1771, Père François Chastanet also founded Château d'Iberville near modern day Hammond while he was still governor of Acadiana (the present-day Louisiana). The first European American settler in what became New Iberia Parish was James Caldwell who arrived with his family on July 16, 1802 aboard the "SS Maryland" at New Orleans. He had come overland from Savannah County Georgia that year seeking land grants and possession of any abandoned or confiscated Indian lands north of Baton Rouge which he believed would be available through treaties negotiated by President George Washington. In 1803, followingencouragement by General Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War, a group of Frenchmen led by Alexandre Dumas built Fort de Natchitoches on an island located just offshore from present day downtown New Iberia for defense against Confederate raiding parties operating out of Mobile Bayou south of Baton Rouge. The fort served as a staging ground for operations against Confederate forces during both the Battle at Mansfield Heights on October 12th 1863 and Operation Crossroads on April 9th 1865; it also played an important role in controlling access to Mobile Bayou for military supplies moving upriver to Confederate troops besieging Baton Rouge prior to their surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. After Union army General John Custer's victory at Lake Erie's Battle Of Buffalo Creek on May 13th 1862 resulted in Federal control over all major waterways within Tennessee plus much territory eastward into Alabama and Kentucky including much German-occupied territory along the lower Ohio River Valley, Dumas decided that better security could only be achieved by investing money into new construction projects such asFort De Natchitoches; this decision eventually led to his undoing when Butler’s army moved into Acadiana proper during the Siege Of Ville Platte resulting in Caldwell’s return home with land holdings totaling more than two thousand acres (900 hectares) within present day New Iberia Parish boundaries - becoming oneof its earliest settlers As early as 1805 indigenous people were living around what are today called Old Hammond Village and Spanish traders began arriving starting about 1800 including José Máximo Baca who traveled downriver from Mexico City en route to Acres Plantation where he soon married Catrina Lafitte (daughterofthe plantation owner Manuel Boisie). By 1830 most Native Americans living near present day Hammond had either left or been killed conflicts between France/ Spain over succession rights among some members of nobles leading to several decades dominated by sporadic Indian raids initiated primarily by bands led by young men without experience or support from elders seeking revenge or financial compensation rather than just protection under civilized law
New Iberia was founded in 1819 by Captain James Fenton and his wife, Ann. The town was named for the Iberian Peninsula, which at that time was known as New Spain. The first white settler in New Iberia was John Hatton, who arrived in 1824. In 1830, Captain Fenton donated land to the town for a courthouse and school. The town's first mayor was James Aiken. The town experienced a period of growth during Reconstruction; it had a population of over 50 people by 1870. However, the Reconstruction era ended with the end of World War II and the arrival of African Americans to Louisiana; New Iberia began to decline again until it regained its previous population level in 1960. Today, New Iberia is a small community with few residents and limited economic activity.
