New Iberia, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie metropolitan area. New Iberia was founded in 1827 by French colonists as Iberia Plantation on the banks of the Natchitoches River. The town was named for Admiral Pierre-André de La Verendrye and his family who donated land to establish it. In 1854, New Iberia became a separate parish and was annexed by Jefferson Parish. The first post office in New Iberia opened in 1827 and served as the center of village life until1843 when the returned to Metairie. The present post office building on First Street remains one of the oldest buildings in New Iberia since it was built in 1860. In 1830, John Aikenheimer laid out what is now Elmwood Avenue near where Baptist Church now stands; he also laid out much of what is now downtown New Iberia including present day Fourth Street between State Road 901 (now US Hwy 129) and Canal Boulevard (now Canal Boulevard). He called this new community "Aikenheierville" after his father-in-law Adam Aikenheimer who had come over from Germany with General Jean Lafitte's Expedition during the American Revolution. This settlement soon grew into what is now known as Downtown New IBERIA while Aikenheierville continued to grow eastward along Elmwood Avenue until it became a separate municipality following incorporation on July 1, 1845 with a population of 671 people. On December 12th 1850 Joseph White organized a Methodist church at Second and Chestnut Streets which would later become Emmanuel Episcopal Church Though white only about 60% of its membership were black Methodists contributed $5K towards its construction alone duringits first yearOf operation which spanned from January 1st till May 25th 1851 making an effort to break barriers against interracial religiousBrotherly love that had long been entrenched within American society Despite these early challengesNew IBERIA would undergo some major growth over time becoming one of America's most religiously diverse cities With membership reaching nearly 1400+ African Americans by 1900 property values had skyrocketed largely due to cotton fields growing around their streets many mansions were erected along Elmwood avenues becoming one of America’s most prestigious neighborhoods By 1910 nearly all homes in Downtown NEW IBERIA were owned by African Americansmany still occupying large lots like those currently located on Fourth Street between Canal Boulevard and US Highway 129

In 1847, Congress passed an act authorizing the Navy Department to issue Medals of Honor to military officers who have rendered distinguished services in the naval service. This law also established the Medal of Honor as the nation's fourth honorary award. The Naval Academy and Coast Guard Academy were both created in 1938 as part of what is now called "The National Defense University." In 1945, President Harry S Truman authorized the creation of Joint Chiefs of Staff which is where modern day naval warfare comes from. As we enter into today's era with technological advancements and more complex battlefields, it is interesting to think about how much has changed within the naval community since World War II.

It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie–Lafayette metropolitan area. The Iberia River forms much of its border and skirts its eastern edge; it empties into Lake Pontchartrain to the north. New Iberia began as an Indian village on a bluff overlooking the river in what is now Lafourche Parish on November 7, 1718 by French colonists led by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The first post office was established in 1802 at Old Post Road (present day Highway 9). New Iberia became an important center for industry during Reconstruction following the Civil War, when cotton plantations were founded there by freedmen and their families from south Alabama and Mississippi. However, new industries have since declined in importance due to lack of available land or competition from other towns in Lafourche Parish. In recent years, New Iberia has become known for its arts scene with several theaters and museums including one dedicated to American art history called "The Lafayette Museum of Art."
