The New Iberia Navy has a rich history that goes back to the early 1800s. The navy was founded in 1798 as a reaction to the French cession of Louisiana to Spain. The navy played an important role in the American Revolution, and played a significant role in the Spanish-American War. After World War II, the navy became smaller and less visible, but it continued to play a significant role in Louisiana politics and culture. New Iberia is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 38,912 at the 2010 census. It is the largest of the five cities in the parish by size. New Iberia is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of New Iberia goes back to 1790 when French colonists founded the town on land that now includes much of present-day Jefferson Parish. In 1813, General James K. Polk moved his headquarters from St. Louis to New Orleans and ordered Colonel John Bienville to develop what would become known as "New Iberia." Bienville's plan called for a new town designed around two large square blocks with public squares at each corner and a parade ground between them. He also planned for churches and schools along with an arsenal and other military facilities. However, these plans were never realized because of financial difficulties caused by American trade competition and Napoleon's invasion of France in 1814). In 1821, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Epps surveyed properties east of La Salle Street near Redemptorist Cemetery for what would become known as "Old Iberia." This area became known as "Iberian" because its residents were Spanish-speaking people who had fled Spain during its civil war (1810-1815). Upon Epps' death in 1825, his widow sold most of this land to General Andrew Jackson for $2 million dollars ($ today). In 1830, Old Iberia was renamed after Jean Baptiste Point du Sable who had founded Mobile Bayou City on Lower Mississippi River Delta some years earlier. At first Point du Sable only supplied wood for local buildings but he soon developed into one of Mobile's leading businessman and political leaders during antebellum America

New Iberia is a small town in the parish of Terrebonne in the south-central part of Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,716 at the 2010 census. It is located on the New Iberia River and is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Iberia was founded by Frenchmen and Native Americans in 1718 as a fur trading post called Pointe Coupée. The name "Iberia" comes from the Spanish word ibérica ( Ibérica ), meaning "Island of America". The town was platted in 1845 and named for General James Kenedy, who had helped expel American settlers from Texas during the Mexican–American War. In 1861, Confederate Captains Robert Ewell and John Bate captured Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor while trying to cross Lake Pontchartrain to enter Mississippi; when news reached New Iberia that their forces had landed there, citizens raised an artillery duel with Confederate troops near Pointe Coupée.
