New Iberia is a town in the parish of New Iberia, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,828 at the 2010 census. It is named after Spain's New Iberia Province. New Iberia was founded in 1849 as a post office on the Baton Rouge River by Nimrod Holland and Captain John Bogue. In 1860 it was renamed for José de la Cueva y Pérez, 3rd Count of La Cueva and 1st Viceroy of Peru. The first store in New Iberia opened in 1859. By 1865 there were twenty-eight stores and six cotton ginners in the town. A millinery shop opened in 1868 and continued to operate until 1907; it was later demolished. A gristmill started operation in 1861 and continued until 1862; it was replaced by a sawmill which operated until 1902. A hotel began operations as the Hotel de la Sante (the Hospitality House) in 1870; it continues to function as a motel today. In 1888 an iron mine sprung up near New Iberia; however, no ore came out because of low grades of coal coming from local landings below Baton Rouge Bayou that had recently been dredged for shipping purposes only five miles (8 km) away! The mine closed down due to lack of business but reopened briefly around 1910 as the mineshaft tours stop at this point nearby: visitors descend into a shaft 12 feet (3 m) deep with walls more than 60 feet (18 m) high! After being closed again during World War II due to an increase in uranium mining activity nearby, the mine reopened briefly again between 1951-1953 before finally closing permanently due to unsafe working conditions once more around 1970s!
