The first European settler in what is now New Iberia was Jean Lafitte who arrived in 1765 with his band of buccaneers from Cuba. He also developed land adjacent to what would become New Iberia; his post at Pointe-à-Pitre attracted trade from as far away as Havana and Mexico City through 1824.
