New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state of Louisiana. The population was 2,651 at the 2000 census and 2,852 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Livingston Parish to the east, Jefferson Parish to the west, Rapides Parish to the north, and St. Bernard Parish to the south. The name "New Iberia" was given to this town by General James Wilkinson in 1793 after he destroyed Fort Necessaire onEBoulevard in present day New Orleans. Wilkinson named his new post for Antonio de Paula y Gasset who had been governor of Spanish Louisiana at that time and who had fought against British forces during King Louis XVI's war with France. In 1803, Captain John Jacob Astor purchased land from Pierre-Jacques Demers near what is now downtown New Iberia. He built a sawmill on current day Bayou Teche which he named for his wife Elizabeth Astor (née Livingston). In 1804, he sold additional land including present-day downtown New Iberia to James Wilkinson for $1 million dollars (). In 1806 General Andrew Jackson moved his Headquarters from Nashville to Saint Augustine and ordered all troops across Mississippi be quartered near Stroudsburg Landing on both sides of Mobile River where they skirmished with Native Americans before withdrawing without battle on July 4th following an arduous march throughols country that included more than 100 miles under cover of darkness over rough terrain covered with dense forest and swampy areas known as "The Great Swamp". New Iberia was founded in 1815 by Captain John L. Moore, who named the town after his Spanish home of Ibiza, one of the Canaries Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The year before, Moore had been a member of a party that explored and mapped Louisiana's interior for the U.S. government. In 1814, he founded Natchitoches on the Mississippi River as part of what would become Louisiana. The first white settlers in New Iberia were Baptist missionaries from Tennessee who arrived in 1819. They began to preach Christianity to Native American tribes living along the riverbanks and through hunting expeditions into present-day Alabama and Mississippi. In 1830, they erected a wooden church at what is now downtown New Iberia and baptized Indian children into Christianity while their parents watched from long distances away. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson (the future president) appointed Colonel James Kenedy as commander of United States forces stationed in Louisiana to suppress Native Americans leading to the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Kenedy ordered New Iberia's militia to march on Mexico City following an outbreak of violence among local Native American tribes that spring. The town quickly came under siege from Mexican forces, who burned down most of its buildings before withdrawing without taking any prisoners or capturing any supplies or materiel.
