New Iberia is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located on the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans. The population was 227,651 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Louisiana and the second-largest in southeast Texas after Houston. The name Iberia comes from Spanish meaning "Island ofibel" or "Island where water flows abundantly." The area that would become New Iberia was first settled by French colonists in 1718 as part of Acadiana (the present-day Louisiana Purchase). The town was founded by Captain Jean Baptiste Chastan and his family on an island near what is now Galveston Bay. In 1803, New Iberia became a community under the jurisdiction of Baton Rouge when it was annexed by that city. In 1836, New Iberia became a parish within Roman Catholic Diocese of West Baton Rouge, which also included most of modern day Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish. On July 16, 1861, it became an independent parish again with its own bishop – Bishop Nicholas Jakes – following a split within the Roman Catholic Church over emancipation issues affecting black Catholics in violation of church teaching then still prevalent throughout much southern France. On November 3, 1898 Hurricane Hugo struck landfall just offshore from New Iberia; damage caused by that storm totaled $6 million (equivalent to about US$183 million at current prices). As a result of Hugo's impact and ensuing flooding across much southeastern Louisiana there were more than 1,000 fatalities and tens of thousands displaced as well as significant structural damage to homes and businesses both inside and outside coastal towns such as Opelousas and Slidell during what has been called one of America's worst natural disasters ever unleashed upon society or environment

New Iberia, Louisiana was first settled in the early 1800s by French colonists. The area became a part of the United States of America after the American Revolution. New Iberia is located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana and is made up of a number of small villages and hamlets that form its rural community feel. The town was founded on October 1, 1865 by Colonel John Cotesworth Marshall and General James Longstreet as part of an effort to gain control over what had been considered English territory. The town was named for Pierre-Jean de La Salle's new headquarters at Iberia which he called Nouvelle Jérusalem. New Iberia slowly grew due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to water resources. It began attracting developers in the late 1800s who built homes, churches, businesses, schools, and other infrastructure. By 1915 there were more than 20 buildings in New Iberia with a population of over 675 residents. During World War II New Iberia played an important role as one of several ports open to Allied shipping along the Orleans River. Many local industries were produced such as munitions production, shipbuilding, papermaking, automotive manufacturing, and boatbuilding. After the war many residents abandoned their homes for various reasons including high levels of market prices for housing or lack thereof; however some continue to live in New IBERIA today despite these challenges.
