New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Cameron in the north-central region of Louisiana. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is one of the oldest towns in Louisiana, founded by French colonists in 1718. New Iberia has a rich history that can be found from its founding to its current day. In 1718, French colonists founded New Iberia as a small trading post on the lower Mississippi River. By 1802, New Iberia had become an important center for trade on the river and throughout much of south central Louisiana. The town's growth continued during the antebellum period; by 1840 it had reached its peak with a population of 3,000 residents. However, following Reconstruction in 1868–1871, New Iberia's fortunes declined rapidly due to loss of jobs and infrastructure investments made by then-Governor John Pemberton. In recent years, however, local entrepreneurs have resurrected New Iberia as an important cultural and tourist destination. In 2006, Mayor Kenney opened Blue Jay Brewery – one of only two breweries open in Orleans Parish – which has led to increased economic activity around town and helped revive some traditional industries such as agriculture and fishing.. New Iberia, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 24,569 at the 2000 census and it had an estimated population of 43,500 as of 2010. New Iberia is one of the most historic towns in Louisiana. The first inhabitants of what is now New Iberia were Native American. In 1765, Captain James Cook sailed by this coast on his exploration of the Indian Ocean and named it "Iberia." Spanish exploration followed in 1802 and they called it "Isla de la Cruz." John Fenton captured land east of present-day New Iberia in 1819 and established Baton Rouge as the capital city for the territory he claimed. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson proposed that Baton Rouge be made the new seat of government for all Upper Louisiana; this proposal was accepted by Congress but not implemented until May 1, 1840 when Baton Rouge became its own separate county. By 1850, however, many French people had arrived in New Iberia from parts of Lower Louisiana following during the Civil War. Many businesses were started here including J D Maguire & Sons grocery store which became one of America's largest Grocery stores In 1892–1893 a group known as Progressives founded what is now Stroudsburg School District No 4 in honor of reformer William Jennings Bryan who had died just weeks before. At that time there were few schools within Rapides Parish so progressivism spearheaded fundraising to build a school on Burkholder Road east side (now Piney Woods Drive). Classes opened September 9th 1893 with thirty students grades K-8 sharing one building with grades 9-12 on Oakwood Avenue across from LPGA Champions Inn (now Gulfstream Park Golf Course). A $10K gift from Mrs Ethel Marriott enabled construction costs to be covered including bond issues which totaled $27K over 10 years resulting in a school complex completed December 6th 1912 with an enrollment capacity for 756 pupils grades Pre-K through 12th grade totaling: 504 boys/girls; 106 boys/girls plus 40 special needs children (later increased to 811) The original building still stands today along Withrow Road next to Walmart while additions have been made both inside and outside since then such as a Gymnasium (2007), Ice Arena (2009), Science Center (2013) and more recently an amphitheater which can accommodate up to 2,500 people using damaged facilities available adjacent to Lake Pontchartrainfront

New Iberia was founded in 1834 by Edwin V. Armstrong and his wife, Cynthia. The town was named for the Iberian Peninsula, which at that time included present-day Spain and Portugal. It grew quickly due to its natural resources, including timber and coal. New Iberia became a vital center of trade in the area, thanks to its location on the Mississippi River. In 1845, Armstrong donated land to build what is now known as Lake Charles Boulevard.
