The Louisiana Army National Guard has a rich history in New Iberia, LA. The Guard was organized on September 16, 1802 as the 1st Regiment of Militia of Louisiana. It was redesignated the 10th Regiment of Militia on July 3, 1821 and then the 4th Regiment of Militia on December 20, 1830. The regiment served under the command of Captain James A. Wilkinson from February 15 to May 16, 1861 during the American Civil War. On November 25, 1870, at Baton Rouge, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Folsom accepted command of the 1st Battalion (New Orleans) Infantry RegimentLouisiana National Guards when Captain John Silliman resigned his commission with that unit due to illness. On January 8, 1871 Major General Edwin M. Stanton ordered Colonel Augustus Folsom to raise and equip a battalion for service with United States forces in Mexico City as part of Operation Anaconda under Command Major General Gideon Welles Johnston. The battalion arrived in Mexico City on October 21 and reported to First Brigade Confederate Infantry Division commanded by Brigadier General William Troup on November 5th. On November 12th colonel Folsom's battalion skirmished with Union troops near Zacatecas while attached to Brigade Pike's Corps commandeered by Brigadier General Winfield Scott Hancock during an attack against Santa Anna's army at Monterrey Barracks which resulted in one soldier killed and eleven wounded including colonel Folsom himself; this engagement is considered one of the decisive actions fought during Mexican-American War Week festivities commemorating US military victory over Mexican insurgents at Chapultepec Park some weeks earlier (see Asiatic Squadron: Battle for Chapultepec). From January 24 through February 6 1862 Colonel Augustus Folsom led a brigade into battle against Federal forces at Fort Gaines located near Memphis Tennessee where he personally led his brigade into action after being specifically requested by Generals Ulysses S Grant and Nathaniel Banks; that engagement is also counted among Union-Lafayette Campaigns' official "First Battle" campaign results as it was first significant action fought within 100 miles of Nashville TN which had been recently captured from Confederate forces resulting in multiple days thereof occupation by Federal troops becoming known as "Battle Creek". Colonel Augustus Folsom later became commanding general for District IX Louisiana State Military District when it was established following Reconstruction; he relinquished his commission effective August 9 1865 concurrent with that district's establishment suffering no ill effects from that experience other than three months layoff without pay consequent upon reduction in size from Regular Army strength caused by deployment to Gulf Coast duties post Vicksburg Mississippi march).
