The French army arrived in force and quickly deployed skirmishers and dragoons to secure retreat routes for the slaves. On November 2,1800, Captain de Lacrosse ordered his regiment of grenadiers to pursue the fleeing slaves. The grenadiers opened fire on the retreating slaves and killed many of them. This action is known as la Bataille des Grenadiers de La Rochelle (the Battle of the Grenadier Regiment from La Rochelle).
