In the early 1800s, Natchitoches was a small town in Louisiana. It was a sparsely populated area and the military had a significant presence. The Natchitoches Militia was founded in 1796, and it served as an armed militia throughout the American Revolution. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson appointed Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson to lead the Militia at Natchitoches. The Militia played an important role in helping to suppress slave uprisings in Louisiana during the antebellum period. From 1802 until 1840, there were also Regular Army stationed at Natchitoches for purposes of hunting and garrisoning skirmishes with Native Americans. The first military deployment of GIs occurred during World War I when 1st Battalion (3rd Infantry Regiment) from New Orleans was sent to fight onthe Western Front. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home but some remained in France for another conflict; World War II began shortly after they left France. At first, local citizens volunteered their services to serve in the military but this eventually became more common due to rationing of food and other resources during wartime. Many women joined the military during WWII as nurses or ambulance drivers; however, service member records do not exist for these individuals beyond 1942. During Indian Removal Act Era (1830s-1870s), many Indians were forced out of their lands including most Choctaws living north of the river before being relocated toArkansas Prairie du Chien County near present day Wichita Falls where they were offered land or free passage back to their homes if they traded goods worth $500 or more per wagonload across Arkansas River for land east of it near present day Decatur County in southern Oklahoma Territory which later became Oklahoma City County.. Most Choctaws chose to live away from white people because they saw no value in white society while someChoctaws managed smallpox epidemics that killed large numbers among whites during this time period; however most Choctaws eventually assimilated into American culture and lost all tribal affiliation Some remaining Choctaw descendants still reside around Natchitocches today including Mayor Wally Goodridge (D) who served from 1992 until 2008 and Chairman Lonnie Boggs Jr.(R) who has held that office since 2004
