In Natchitoches, Louisiana, marine gift history goes back to the 1800s. In 1846, two American seamen named John Wesley Powell and George Hill founded a trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River. The post was called Point Comfort and became an important stop for travelers between New Orleans and Illinois. It was from here that Powell fell in love with shellfish and started importing them to Natchitoches. The early years of Marine Gifts were a time of great success for the company. In 1978, Willard Wernick purchased Marine Gifts from Polk's widow, Eleanor Randolph. Wernick had been Orville Redford's personal chef during their long-distance relationship from California to Louisiana during the late 1960s and 1970s. As head cook at Wernick's home in Baton Rouge, he developed a deep appreciation for seafood and its importance in Southern cuisine. He decided to purchase Marine Gifts as a means of expanding his culinary knowledge beyond Louisiana waters into other parts of America where seafood was also popularly enjoyed - such as New England and Florida - making him one of the first major seafood retailers ever born within our borders! Wernick quickly made changes at Marine Gifts so that it would be more contemporary than its predecessor--a move that helped set off an exciting period for the company throughout the 1980s through 1990s when innovative new products began rolling out like never before: Jameson Shrimp Cocktails (sold nationally), Jumbo shrimp tails (now offered internationally), Regal Seafood Savers (now sold nationwide), live lobster (now sold domestically only), crabcake doughnuts...the list goes on!

Natchitoches is a small, rural town in southern Louisiana. The population was 5,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Micropolitan Statistical Area. Natchitoches is located on the Assumption River and according to the 2010 census, has a total area of 22 square miles (56 square kilometers). The first people to live in what is now Natchitoches were hunters and gatherers who traveled through the area for food. The first white person to reside here was John Baptiste de la Salle, who founded St. Mary's Parish in 1785. In 1802, General James Kenedy burned down parts of this community so that Frenchmen could not trade with us and take advantage of our resources. The town was named after Nicholas-Jacques Natchitoches, an officer in France's army during the American Revolutionary War. When he returned home from battle in 1794 he found his family had been massacred by Indians and so he settled near New Orleans in what is now Slidell Parish. He started a clothiers business here which became very successful; support for this industry helped keep Natchitocches alive until around 1930 when automobiles arrived and ruined much of its economy as farmers moved away from cotton production to these new technologies. One reason why many people have always enjoyed visiting Natchitoches is its excellent shopping opportunities available throughout its many villages including: Assumptionville, Pointe aux Meadows, Errols Mills, Bellefontaine Village, Cottonwood Grove Village, Allendale Heights Village and others within walking distance or less depending on where you are located within the village limits...A Visit to any one of these villages will broaden your understanding of life back home even more! These events help bring awareness about local businesses/events taking place while promoting economic development within the village itself...plus there are plenty more activities available each week if desired!
