However, despite this setback, Natchitoches persevered through time and during World War II became an important center for munitions production due to its location at the intersection of several major highways. After the war ended, there slowly began to emerge again as a vibrant community with strong ties to both local businesses and Acadiana culture overall. In recent years however, there have been increasing concerns about how gentrification may impact some aspects of life within Natchitocches while also threatening some historical values that make this community so special. Natchitoches is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 3,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City metropolitan area. The Natchitoches Historic District is a registered historic district in Natchitoches and includes buildings dating back to the 18th century. The name "Natchitoches" comes from an Oto Indian word meaning " place where there are no trees." There were some trees on the site when French traders first arrived in what is now Natchitoches in 1714. By 1800, most of the land around Natchitocches had been acquired by private owners, but about 100 claims still remained for use as plantations by planters from Baton Rouge and other parts of Louisiana. In 1860, after two years of Civil War fighting between Unionists and Confederate forces, Yankees moved into what is now Natchitoches because they wanted to establish an agricultural center in central Louisiana. A Presbyterian church was built here soon afterwards and became known as Christ Episcopal Church (now First Baptist Church). When New Orleans was founded in 1812 as a trading post on the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri, merchants coming West needed goods such as flour to be transported east; so it’s not too surprising that early stores near today’s Merrimack Street were called “the flour market” or “the river port” (1). In 1840 settlers started arriving at what would become downtown Natchitoches from areas around Baton Rouge and Longueville because there were few opportunities for agriculture south of Interstate 10 following Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29th that year (2). They brought with them their knowledge of how to raise cotton – much like present-day residents who still grow crops on many acres throughout the city limits (3). At one point during this time period there were more people living along US Highway 190 than living anywhere else within range of New Orleans proper! And yet despite this large influx of newcomers several decades later only 1/3 of all jobs created during that time period went to natives born within city limits while almost half went outside those boundaries4 (4)! This suggests that many native-born citizens wanted out because they saw little opportunity for success either within or beyond their traditional hometown9 (*!). Consequently native businesses began to fill vacated positions leaving behind few natives with experience leading businesses10 (*!). And so it came about that over time nearly all high school graduates currently working full-time in New Orleans have roots here11(*!), including almost all mayors since 198412 (*)!

Natchitoches is a town in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the seat of Natchitoches Parish. The population was 5,889 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mississippi River in east-central Louisiana near New Orleans. The town's name is derived from an early French settlement called "Natchez". In 1794, General James Wilkinson founded a post office in Natchitoches, naming it for his friend and general Montresor Nicholls. The post office was discontinued in 1872 because of lack of customers. Today, Natchitoches lies within the city limits of New Orleans and its population has swelled to over 11,000 since 1960 due to its proximity to downtown and other attractions in the city center. The economy of Natchitocches depends chiefly upon agriculture; however, there are also some small businesses located here that do not rely upon agriculture as their primary business model. The history of Natchitoches can be traced back to when Europeans first arrived in what is now New Orleans area during the 16th century AD. One account suggests that a group of Native Americans known as the Atchafalaya were responsible for driving away European settlers from what is now Natchitoches County before they could establish any permanent settlements hereabouts. A later French expedition set out from Fort Moselle on April 6, 1793 with Lieutenant Colonel de Chartres as commander-in-chief and Captain René Desault as lieutenant colonel escort providing protection for La Louisiane (the Louisiana Territory acquired by France following her victory over Great Britain at Yorktown). They discovered an Indian village numbering about seventy people situated along present day I-10 just east of Baton Rouge on Lake Pontchartrain which they named Jourdainville after Jean Baptiste Jourdain who served with them aboard ship “ Saint Laurent” during this expedition under command of Admiral Dupleix – one year after Nicolas Gouvion had landed at Jourdainville with his forces seeking refuge from British troops led by Count Nicholas de Bourgogne . The village was abandoned two weeks after arrival but not before many natives were killed or captured including Chief Poutre who was scalped following an altercation with Capt De Chartres . Soon thereafter two small posts were established at Jourdainville - one by Capt Desault himself under cover of darkness on October 9, 1793 and one about three miles upstream by Maj Lhermitte under similar circumstances November 15th both having occupants only until December 1st when all occupants escaped through a breach nearpresent day Canal Street near Veteran Cemetery . Natchitoches was founded in 1759 by the French as a trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town became an important center for fur trade and commerce, and its location made it a convenient staging ground for shipments of goods to New Orleans.
