Natchitoches is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Natchitoches was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The town began to form around 1800 when a group of French colonists moved from Iberia to what is now Jefferson Parish and founded a community called "Horseshoe Bend." In 1803, Natchitoches became the capital of south Louisiana under President James K. Polk after Baton Rouge was destroyed by a flood. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson moved his troops from Vicksburg to Mobile Bay and established Fort Jackson here as part of his campaign against southern secessionists. When Mobile Bay fell to Union forces in April 1831, Natchitoches became an important stop on the Mississippi River for Confederate soldiers and civilians fleeing the city during the Civil War. The town's old courthouse still stands today although it has been largely replaced by modern buildings since World War II. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many black men were brought into Natchitoches as sharecroppers or tenant farmers while white people continued to live there until 1975 when all white residents were ordered out following racial tension brewing throughout the parish over land rights issues among African Americans and other minority groups living within its boundaries. At that time most African American residents left for other parts of New Orleans or Baton Rouge due to integration policies then being implemented in these cities through actions such as desegregation education programs and zoning laws which prohibited blacks from living near white neighborhoods without first purchasing property inside those areas which they could not access without breaking local law). As early as 1868 local newspapers noted complaints about water shortages caused by lack of cleanliness and high rates for licenses to operate mills that had sprung up throughout town due mainly to growing cotton fields owned by whites rather than state-sponsored agrarian farming projects favored by minorities like Negroes who were not able to own or cultivate land themselves (See also: "Natchitoches Herald" dated October 30th 1870) ). As late as 1932 one resident commented on this situation writing "There are few places where you can walk about free from fear for your life; but here you must be very careful". In 1941 WPA workers built six miles (10 km) of pipeline across wetlands ending at Shorewood Plantation east of town filling in large gaps left between native forests once used by huntersgathering camps & their earthworks Pioneer Mound Site Survey Party found evidence oldest known human habitation on Coastal Plain 4500 BP

Natchitoches, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Petronius Natchitoches in 1824 as a small community on the banks of the Assumption River. In 1836, Natchitoches became an incorporated municipality and remained so until it merged with other Jefferson Parish municipalities in 1972. The name "Natchitoches" derives from an Indian word meaning "place where there are no trees." The first white settlers in what would become Natchitocches arrived around 1800 and began to cultivate corn and cotton plantations. By 1830, most of these settlers had relocated to Baton Rouge and other nearby cities because of increasing competition for land from African Americans seeking new opportunities in a newly open America. In 1836, when the area that would become Natchitoches was under French control as part of La Louisiane colony, General Jean-Baptiste Bellegarde ordered all Native American men over eighteen years old to leave their homes immediately or be captured and taken to Mobile Bay for slavery. Of those who refused to leave their homes or were captured by British forces during the Battle of New Orleans (1812), only Petronius Natchitoches managed to escape execution and migrate his family into present-day Arkansas County south of Fayetteville before finally making his way back home in 1840. 1
