In 1803, John Morgan and James McMurtry surveyed land around present-day Morgan City on behalf of France while working as contract traders for Captain Richard Coke’s exploration party seeking to extend French influence into areas east of Mobile Bayou (then part of Spanish Louisiana). When President James Kenedy designated Baton Rouge as his new capital city following his inauguration on May 14 that year, he ordered all French citizens living west of Baton Rouge must leave within 24 hours or face arrest unless they could provide assurances that they would move to East Baton Rouge Parish—a territory then under English control—where there would be no fear of Dutch invasions or attacks from Native Americans. John Morgan soon realized that this order would have a significant impact on his community because it gave him exclusive rights to sell goods Provided he could get transportation upriver to market at rates above those available anywhere else east of Mobile Bayou without having to worry about possible seizure by French authorities should he attempt to sell anything beyond what had been given him permission by Mardi Gras committee chairman Pierre Lafitte! . . . This privilege allowed Mr.Morgan not only To develop his land but also To serve as Mayor thereof until His death On April 16th 1830 Living there Above 50 years At A Time When There Was No Such Thing As A Post Office In That Area And All Letters Were Sent By Sea Only! These men began construction on what became known as Old Ford Road which ran parallel to the Red River Valley Railroad (now I-10) northward from Alexandria across rapids at today's Coliseum Bridge before coming downriver again just past present day Bowie Lake onto modern day Highway 82/I-10 bridge just south of downtown Monroeville Sam Houston said "We will have our village here very shortly". General Lafayette visited Morgan City two weeks after Méndez got word about Kenedy's orders and praised both men for their work contributing "to establishing North America" accordingely much celebration took place throughout river valley area including old fortifications still standing today

Morgan City is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in east-central Louisiana. The population was 2,814 at the 2000 census. It is named for General James K. Morgan, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Louisiana. The first settlement near present-day Morgan City was established by French colonists in 1699 on the banks of the Illinois River. By 1800, there were approximately 100 people living hereabouts. The area around present day Morgan City had been claimed by France since cession of Louisiana to Spain in 1763; however, no settlements were made until 1801 when Colonel John Chouteau founded a post office here with three employees and named it after himself, John Chouteau's hometown, La Salle County (now Stroudsburg). In 1802, Stephens family moved from Mobile Bayou to this area and began homesteading what would become known as "Big Muddy". In 1805 they sold their land to Jeter & Stephenson for $10 per acre ($2 per square mile). This became known as "Muddy Prairie" because it drained into Big Muddy Creek which ran through present-day Morgan City before emptying into Tensas River about five miles upstream. The Stephenses continued to farm for many years and when their youngest son went off to college in1890 he left them all behind and started a cotton plantation on their property that remains one of America's largest cotton plantations today. When New Orleans was attacked by Confederate troops on April 14th 1862 during the American Civil War, General James K. Morgan led an attack against them at Brown's Ferry; his cavalry detachment played such an important role that Union commanders decided not to pursue him further because they could not effectively fight without supplies or reinforcements upriver at Baton Rouge where General Robert E Lee was entrenched with his army of more than two million men stationed across several hundred miles of territory
