It was named for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution and helped secure Louisiana's independence from France. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location between Baton Rouge and New Orleans on one side and Memphis on the other side of the Mississippi River; it also developed into an important shipping point because it had access to both rivers.
