Morgan City, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of St. Bernard in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 2,887 at the 2010 census. It is one of the smallest towns in the state and has only two blocks of streets. Morgan City was founded by Johnathan Jennings in 1811 as a trading post on the Red River. In 1827, James Waddell established a store here and named it after his friend, General Lafayette Smith (1779-1846). The first post office was established here in 1829. By 1840, Morgan City had become an important commercial center for the area due to its location on the Red River and its access to riverboats that brought goods from Texas and New Orleans. In 1857, Captain Isaac Hull erected a fortification known as Fort Hector which served as a military depot for local settlers and against Indian attacks during the American Civil War. After Confederate forces sacked Fort Hector on May 10, 1863, Union forces recaptured it two days later and renamed it Fort Hindman to honor General Robert E Lee (1807-1865). The fortifications were decommissioned by 1948 but are still visible today within town limits.
