Morgan City is a small town in the state of Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,652 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orleans Parish seat and is located in the southeastern corner of the parish. The name Morgan City comes from Nicholas Morgan, an early settler who platted what would become Morgan City on a tract of land that had been granted to him by Governor John Martin in 1799. The town was named for General James Wilkinson Morgan, who served as military governor of Louisiana during the War Between the States (1812-1815). In 1819, General Wilkinson's son Ulysses S. Grant moved his family to Morgan City from New Orleans after they were commandeered by General Andrew Jackson during his siege of Mobile Bay. In 1875, Attorney J.D. Higgins built a log courthouse on Main Street and became one of America's first lawmen elected to public office while serving as prosecuting attorney for Orleans Parish (later Jefferson Parish). Higgins also founded and ran an oil refinery in nearby Alexandria before dying in 1902 at age 86 years old. Morgan City has undergone several changes over its history; some which are still visible today include its original French Creole architecture dating back to the early 1800s and its now dilapidated streetscapeintage cotton ginning operations until 1946 when it closed due to lack of demand for raw cotton following World War II

The old courthouse remained in use until 1870 when it too burned down. The town experienced growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its activities as a port and cotton center. In 1907, Morgan City became an incorporated city and continued to grow until World War II when it lost its status as a city because of the war effort.
