In 1871, Monroe became the temporary capital of Louisiana after Baton Rouge was destroyed by a fire. In 1846, it became an incorporated village under the name of Monroe Center after its incorporation into Orleans Parish by Act No. 585 of January 1,1846; this act placed Monroe within what is now Jefferson Davis Parish east of Old Hammond Road in present-day Metairie, LA The first post office in Monroe was established on October 17, 1800 by Captain George Shelby with his family living in a cabin near today's corner of West Broad and Wilkinson Streets. The first store opened for business on December 14th from Aveson & Herndon’s store located on South Tryon Street just east of what is now State Street between Canal and Claiborne Streets (now Piney Woods Drive). The early days were very difficult because there were no roads or canals to attract businesses so many people traveled to New York City for goods they could not get elsewhere. Van Wagoner donated land for a public square that served as the center around which all businesses would have their entrances facing due north with Market Square serving as their downtown square
