Monroe is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is the seat of Monroe County. The population was 20,569 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from John Monckton, 2nd Viscount Monckton of Bexley and his wife Lady Jane Grey who moved to Monroe in 1811 from their principality of Walthamstow in England because they could not find an English-speaking community to provide them with a home. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Monroe around 1800 by way of Iberia Parish. In 1814, General James K. Polk sent troops under Lieutenant General Andrew Jackson into Iberia Parish to quash a slave revolt there led by Captain Isaac Longstreet and his men; the slaves had uprising because they were being treated poorly by their white owners. As part of this campaign, Jackson's forces burned down some plantations near present-day Monroe and destroyed many homes and barns used for storage on them before entering into Indian Territory west of Baton Rouge where he soon found himself involved in another slave revolt known as the Alamo Circuit Campaign (1836–1839). In 1840, after years during which he had been without news from America due to illness,[1] James K. Polk learned that his brother Charles Gist had been captured alive at Palo Alto Rancho de las Pulgas (on Alamo Creek) northeast of San Antonio while trying to cross over Texas into Mexican territory; after weekslong captivity he was released on January 7, 1841[2][3][4] just days before Polk was elected President on November 3 that year.[5] In 1840 two brothers - Sam Houston (1784–1846) and Stephen Fenton Houston (1800–1868)) came across land east side US 41 north of present day Monroe & bought it from a group including Menard brothers who also owned much land along Red River southward including present day Lafayette & Thibodaux Parishes (& modern day Opelousas Parish). They named their new settlement “Houston” afterStephen Fenton Houston’s older brother who had died young in France prior to founding that colony – A very early example if communal naming practices still followed today! Their younger brother John Kirby almost certainly contributed something like forty acres or so towards erection/edging/landscaping of original “Houston” foundation place about one mile SW side RR tracks leading NNW 10 miles out onto prairie then W 1/4 mile SE corner Rte 281/US 61 which intersects main street NW renamed “Houston” only recently? So some think it may be oldest extantenterprise within present boundaries OF MONROE!!! From here folks started traveling ESE via OPEN ROAD CROSSING HWY 19 THEN WEST ON HWY 281 TO GET TO THEIR COMMUNITY!
