Monroe is a small town in the parish of Nicholls in north Louisiana. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Monroe is located on Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 90. The land that would become Monroe was first hunted by Native American groups for their food and materials long before white settlers arrived in what is now Monroe Parish in 1774. A French trading post was established here in 1781, but it burned down two years later while its occupants were being taken prisoner by British forces during the Seven Years' War. A United States Post Office was established here under the name of Jennings on February 12, 1827, but it too failed to take off because only men could serve as mail carriers at that time. The first settler to arrive in what would become Monroe Parish was James White who platted his land around 1810 and built a cabin near present day Wishard Lake Dam across from today's First Baptist Church site on Maple Avenue. whites began moving into this area beginning around 1840 when railroads reached this region and began offering transportation options for people looking for new homes outside of Mobile County, Alabama which at that time included much of Louisiana east of the Mississippi River Valley including parts of Tensas Parish and Rapides Parish west of I-10 where Williamsburg lay just beyond Baton Rouge city limits

Monroe was a small town in the Louisiana Purchase area of America. The town was founded by Frenchmen on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about six miles north of present-day Monroe. The community developed quickly and soon had a store, school, post office, and prayer meeting house. In 1819, Monroe's first white male settler, James Keyes, arrived from Maine with his family. He started a mill near the town and began to trade goods with other settlements along the river. In 1825, Alabama statehood was granted to Louisiana; as part of this change, Monroe became its second city. The population grew rapidly due to waves of immigration from all over North America during that period. In 1830, construction began on what is now known as Jackson Square (now downtown Monroe). This new commercial center served as the nucleus for much of the growth and development of Monroe over ensuing decades. In 1836, when New Orleans was besieged by Confederate forces during an attempt to control access to Mobile Bay through Alabama territory they occupied while fighting against General Robert E Lee's army there were several skirmishes in and around Monroe between Confederate troops and Federal supporters including Keyes himself who fought bravely but ultimately lost his life at the hands of Union soldiers while trying to save his home countrymen
Monroe was the seat of government for Orleans Parish from 1785 to 1815. The town was founded in 1785 by General John York after he won a Royal Field Order for his help in suppressing a Native American uprising. The first courthouse and jail were built in the town. In 1814, Monroe became the capital of Louisiana when New Orleans was burned by a group of French colonists. The population of Monroe increased rapidly during the 1830s due to the construction of new roads and plantations in the area. The city's growth caused problems with water supplies, which led to flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in 1836. A fire destroyed most of what remained of Monroe in 1840, marking oneofthe deadliest natural disasters ever to affect New Orleans. The city declined during Reconstruction following the Civil War, but regained some stability during World War II when it became an important military hub. However, Monroe again declined after Katrina struck in 2005, causing significant damage and loss of life. Today, it is an economically struggling community that is still Strugglingto recover from its past trauma.
