It was not until 1923 that a new station was built at the entrance to Lake Pontchartrain. In 1962, Coast Guard Station New Orleans opened which provided permanent housing for the detachment stationed at Marine Barracks Quarantine Station. The Coast Guard detachment headquartered in Monroe began providing service to South Louisiana as well as coastal Mississippi and Alabama. On October 1st, 1998, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HMHS) were transferred from Mobile Beach to Monroe following an agreement between then Commandant of Marine Corps Adm James Smeaton and Mayor Mitch Landrieu. At this time Dover Air Force Base became home to HMHS with support from activated Duty Officer Squadron 509 stationed there along with other units of the military services who provide aviation security for events such as Presidential inaugurations or parades of all branches of military service including Coast Guard motorboats during special occasions like Independence Day or Christmas Eve etcetera . The present day mission of Coast Guard Station Monroe is protecting maritime interests within South Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama by providing law enforcement patrol services through its three stations: New Orleans station, Mobile Beach station and Dover Air Force Base station. Additionally it provides humanitarian assistance when requested by local governments through its response boat program known as “Cochin City” which responds to disasters such as floods or hurricanes where boats are available for boating operations within 24 hours after notification is received from government officials
