The United States Army has a long and storied history in Monroe, Louisiana. The city was founded by French colonists in 1763, and the military played a significant role in its early development. In 1802, the U.S. Military Academy was founded here, and the army participated in many of the earliest American wars. By 1865, the army had dwindled to just 5,000 soldiers—less than one percent of America’s total population—and Monroe saw its first peacetime occupation as part of Reconstruction Era America. The post-Civil War years were more peaceful until 1898 when war began with Cuba and Mexico. The Spanish-American War also saw an increased presence of the U.S.Army in Monroe as skirmishes took place along the Louisiana borderlands between Spain and Nicaragua and Argentina (now Uruguay). In World War I, Monroe again became involved as part of demobilization after America’s entry into hostilities on April 6th 1915 following France’s declaration of war against Germany two days earlier. As civilian casualties mounted from combat in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson ordered that all troops be withdrawn from Canada by October 1st 1915 so that they could return home for Thanksgiving dinner instead of going to Europe to fight another round of war only six months later! This decision proved fateful as it left much needed manpower idle at home while America engaged in yet another conflict abroad; having lost over 650 men dead or missing during World War I alone! Despite this tragedy, local businesses did brisk business selling foodstuffs such as bread and butter because no one really knew what else to do with all those soldiers who had turned their backs on civilization! On September 26th 1918 – less than four weeks after America entered World War I – president Wilson announced plans to send 2 million men overseas once again; this time to serve under Great Britain’s command in order “to put an end forever any feeling among Americans that our country was essentially at odds with Great Britain…. American participation would be limited strictly to training purposes”! And so it began another era for the USArmy in Monroe: one full of expansionist endeavors across multiple continents beyond anything seen before! Although there were some setbacks during these years such as World War II which marked the first time Americans self-identified themselves quite openly withinordesignatedly as enemiesofthe Axis Powers (a term used exclusively for Nazi Germany), overall things went smoothly enough until Pearl Harbor brought about worldwide mobilization which forced small town USA into gear once again! With over 100,000 servicemen now deployed around the world including 50% stationed inside North Africa where Operation Torch failed miserably due largely to faulty intelligence supplied by General George Patton himself; eventually leading directly to WW2! It is interesting to note that although most active duty members have since retired from service (the last active duty soldier being discharged from dutyDECEMBER 2006) local businesses still handle military merchandise sales today thanks largely to appropriated funds allocated specifically for this purpose by Congress five years ago known as “Operation Goodwillthropy”!!!
