The first settlers in Minden were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1805. They named the community after their captain, Michel de Menil, who had for years been leading an expedition to explore the new world. In 1868, Reverend James Gwynn founded what is now St. John's Episcopal Church and School on First Street near Interstate 10. The church served as a Methodist meeting ground until 1901 when it became part of First Baptist Church which still meets there today. In 1902, developer Leland Stanford bought 100 acres of land east of Minden and began to build what would eventually become Stanford University; today's Palo Alto Campus was completed in 1913. When World War I started in 1914, local residents volunteered to serve on all branches of government; many served as soldiers or airmen and returned home with valuable knowledge about war-time technology.
