Minden is located on the eastern bank of the St. Bernard River and has a land area of . The first white person to set foot on what is now Minden soil was Capt. John Baptiste Dormer who landed there in 1761 as part of Captain James Cook's exploratory expedition from England. He named his landing point "Dormer's Bay" after himself and built a stockade here to protect his men from native people he believed were planning to attack them. A post office called Dormer's Bay was established in 1814, but it failed to take off because no one wanted to mailed their goods cross-country for fear of being construed as hostile by the natives. In 1815, Frenchmen Francois Beauregard and Pierre Lacrosse founded a small town on nearby Baton Rouge River where they operated sugar plantations while still living among the Indian tribe they had captured five years earlier during the American Revolution war with France. Minden was founded in 1852 by J.D. Power and Company as a trading post on the Red River. The company had been established in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when Colonel John C. Moore became its first owner. In 1853, the post moved to Minden where it remained until it closed its doors in 1925. The town today is located on a small peninsula off of State Highway 190 between Minden and Alexandria. The original town site was within present-day Alexandria which at that time was an unincorporated community adjacent to what is now Minden Township. The Town of Minden began as a small plantation village located about two miles northeast of Alexandria on the banks of the Red River near modern day Alexandria-Minden Township line. A ford across the river led from one side of this plantation village to another, and so there were several crossing points available for goods moving between these plantations and Alexandria under colonial rule. By 1852, power companies owned important sections of the state including portions of what are nowMinden Township, Alexandria, Jefferson Parish (now New Orleans), Plaquemines Parish (now St Tammany Parish), and Plaquemines County (now Slidell). It seems likely that J.D. Power & Company took over some or all of these holdings when they purchased General Electric’s Baton Rouge business in 1865 from George Westinghouse Sr., son-in-law to Westinghouse’s brother Edwin Ladd Jr..
