Minden is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 1,380 at the 2000 census. Minden is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, and it is also the location of La Salle University, which was founded in 1853 and now one of UL Lafayette's largest universities with over 36,000 students. The community began as a farming village on the banks of the Red River in what is now Minden Township. The first settlers were French-Canadian refugees from Quebec who had come to America during the early 1800s looking for new opportunities. In 1827, John Swayne bought 4 acres (1 ha) of land near where Minden now stands and built a cabin called Swayne's Bluff on its current site. He named his property Minden after his ancestor Major General Nicholas Carondelet who fought in Canada against American independence forces during the War of 1812. The first post office was established at Minden in 1836, but it did not stay open very long because only men could serve as mail carriers then. The first store opened in 1837 and was run by Mr. Purdy until he moved to New Orleans two years later to join his brother-in-law, William Fenton Sr., who operated a store there also before moving back to Minden in 1840s In 1865, Leland Stanford purchased some donated land northeast of town from James Waddell for $3,500 and started building Stanford University on what would eventually be known as campus square today With no railroads available to carry goods into or out of town during those days, there wasn't much commerce that took place here other than agriculture until well into the 20th century when mindener merchants started buying items like gasoline and tires from Lafitte gasoline station located about 2 miles (3 km) eastward on Highway 9A . And that’s how we came up with our name – “Minden” means "gasoline station" in French When Huey Long became president of Louisiana after being elected as an independent candidate at age 26 years old on November 3rd,-1932 he changed all that by ordering state government services administrated by county commissioners instead of centralized government controlled by politicians statewide thru patronage

There are several churches in Minden including Missionary Baptist Church which has been serving its congregation since 1853; First Baptist Church which opened its doors in 1837; Presbyterian Church which built its first church here in 1905; and Methodist Episcopal Church which meets inside an old munitions plant across from town square.
