Mandeville, Louisiana is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,748 at the 2010 census. Mandeville is one of the oldest settlements in Jefferson Parish and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 200 years. The first white settlers arrived in 1785. In 1802, Captain John Sutter founded the City of Sacramento on land that he had acquired from the French language tribe of the Chitimacha. California was then part of Mexico and not part of Louisiana until 1803 when it became part of America. The city was named after Sir John Mandeville who traveled through central Louisiana on his way to visit Spanish missions in Texas in 1794-95. In 1810, Captain James Kenedy founded New Orleans and included portions of what are now Mandeville and Lake Charles within its limits as well as parts of Thibodaux and Bossier City which later became Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson moved United States troops into present day Jefferson Parish to suppress an insurrection against Mexican rule that began with military action known as Act for Regulating Commerce (Lecompton Acts). From 1830 to 1840, sugar plantations were established along most or all of today's Main Street between Baton Rouge Road and Hammond Street northward from Interstate 10/Uptown Expressway westward from Interstate 10 eastward; other major streets include Gentilly Street (now I-10 Business), Magazine Street (now US 90),Airport Boulevard (I-10/US 90 exit 3),New Orleans Avenue (I-10 Business/US 90 exit 2) and West End Avenue (I-10 Business/US 90 exit 1). When railroads came to Mandeville during World War II they introduced a new type of plantation economy called "industrial agriculture." This involved employing Negroes directly to do manual labor such as planting crops or cultivating fields on large estates while whites worked out contracts providing essential services such as transportation, guarding property or working on specific tasks such as horticulture or construction. Mandeville, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Ascension in east-central Louisiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mandeville was founded by French colonists in 1699 as "Acre". The name derives from the Mande word amand (meaning wood), and it refers to the area's large stands of sugarcane. The town began to grow rapidly during Reconstruction, when American soldiers and their families moved into Mandeville and other areas of eastern Ascension Parish to support the new government following up on Reconstruction policies designed to improve African American poverty and civil rights. In 1881, Mandeville became a city under Act No. 9 of 1881, which granted city status to any parish with a population over 1,000 residents within ten years of its passage. The first mayor was Félix Leducque. During World War II, Mandeville played an important role in the supply chain formobile forces fighting in Europe and North Africa; its port allowed military ships to dock without fear of seizure or damage by enemy navies. Afterward, Mandeville experienced rapid growth as an educational center with two colleges – one private – and many businesses established themselves there including insurance companies, banks, manufacturing plants and warehouses that processed munitions for Allied troops during World War II. By 1970sMandeville had become one of New Orleans' most diverse communities with significant African American populations accounting for more than 50%of its total population; however%, crime rates remain high among this community's wealthier neighborhoods due primarily to poverty and lack of access to affordable policing services
