The first people to live in what is now Lake Charles were Creek Indians who arrived from Alabama around 1765. By 1802, French Canadians settled along the riverbanks where present day streets were laid out. In 1804, Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States and ordered surveyors to map out a route for a slave trade road from Mobile, Alabama to New Orleans via Lower Louisiana; this route ran through present day Lake Charles. The town of Lacourville was founded by white traders as early as 1810 on land that had been part of Iberia Parish before it was apportioned to Nagin County, Mississippi Territory under General Jackson's orders upon his victory over Santa Anna at Palo Alto Bridge on November 6th, 1806 In 1830, when Andrew Jackson became president of America following his election as an Independent candidate against John Quincy Adams (the incumbent), he decided to move Old Capitol Hill northward into newly created Lacourville parish which would become Jackson Parish Jackson named two streets after himself: State Street (now Main Street) and Federal Avenue (now Second Avenue). On December 5th 1830, Jackson signed an order ordering all military stores throughout America be closed for Christmas because "Christmas presents will not be received during my Administration". This order led to shortages of food for soldiers stationed in America during the 1830s–40s On January 12th 1840 James Kenedy bought 3200 acres south of town from Francois Parenteau for $1USD per acre In 1840 Kenedy donated another 4000 acres east of town including current day Harrisonburg Road which forms today's eastern border between Lacourville parish and Addison County A more recent addition to the City limits is Hurricane Katrina's landfall on September 29th 2005 so much damage has occurred since then that most maps still reflect only those areas within City Limits
The first Europeans to visit what is now Lake Charles were the Spaniards in 1539. The area was explored by French and Spanish explorers in the 16th century, but no permanent settlements were formed until 1764 when General James Wilkinson founded a post on the southern bank of the Mississippi River. By 1815, two years after Louisiana became a U.S. state, the population of Lake Charles had reached 350 people. In 1836, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, ending the Civil War on April 9th, 1865. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, land west of New Orleans became part of Lake Charles while much of east Baton Rouge County went to Jefferson Parish. In 1907-1908 construction began on what is now known as First Baptist Church (later called First United Methodist). The church was completed and dedicated in 1909 by Bishop John Laddsius with assistance from American Builder Jno Harkins and local contractor George Wittell Jr.. The new building served as both a parish hall and school until it was destroyed by fire in 1926. A new church was constructed along Third Street between I-10 and US 90 in 1954; this structure also served as parish hall for many years before being retired in 2000 and sold to an educational institution. Lake Charles experienced significant growth following World War II with the establishment of numerous military installations including Naval Air Station Patuxent River (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) as well as other Navy barracks and general storage facilities throughout town limits during that time period . During the late 1960s through early 1970s more retail businesses opened up including several convenience stores/cafeterias before eventually closing down or moving out due to competition from large box retailers such as Walmart . Development continued through the late 1990s into most recent times with various new apartment buildings being constructed along Third Street including one highrise which has been operational since 2006 dubbed "The Mount".
